What is the Pulitzer Prize?

The Pulitzer Prize is a prestigious award administrated by Columbia University.

Recognizing achievements in the fields such as newspaper, online journalism, magazine, literature, and musical compositions in the United States of America. It was established in 1917 by a renowned newspaper publisher, Joseph Pulitzer.

Prizes are awarded annually in twenty-two categories. Winners get US$ 15,000 as an award with a certificate (increased from US$ 10,000 in 2017). The winner in the public service sector is given a Gold Medal as a token of appreciation.

Pulitzer Prize 2023 : General Non-fiction

His Name is George Floyd: The One Man's Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice, written by Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa (Viking).

How did the Pulitzer Prize Start?

Newspaper publisher Joshper Pulitzer funds Columbia University to start a journalism school and introduce Pulitzer Prize. It is allocating $250,000 to the prize and scholarship. Four awards in letters and four awards in journalism, four in drama, four in traveling, and one in education scholarships.

After Pulitzer's Death on October 29, 1911, the first Pulitzer Prize was held on June 4th 1917.

The awards covered journalism, letters, art, and fiction categories. United States of America-based newspaper recognises magazines and news organisations that publish regularly are eligible for prizes under the journalism category. The photography category continues to restrict still images.

In December 2008, for the first time, the announcement of the content present online-only news sources will also get consideration for the prize.
