The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in the country, which recognizes the exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. It is a prestigious award that honours the achievements and excellence of individuals who have made India proud with their contributions. The award has a rich history, rigorous criteria, a formal process, and a generous benefit. The award has been conferred upon 49 individuals, including four foreign nationals, who have excelled in various fields such as politics, education, science, art, literature, sports, social service, and peace. The award, however, has also faced controversies and criticisms, due to the lack of transparency, objectivity, and consistency in the selection process, and the exclusion, inclusion, violation, or dilution of the award’s rules and regulations. The Bharat Ratna, therefore, is an award that inspires admiration and respect, as well as debate and dissent, among the people of India.
