Description of Sunflower

The Sunflower is an annual plant that grows 3-15 feet tall with coarse, hairy leaves and hairy stems. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves are arranged in spirals and range in width from 3 to 12 inches, widest at the base of the stem. The upper portion of the plant often branches which bears many flower heads. These vibrant heads have yellow petals around a brown, maroon, yellow, or purple disk. Flower heads can grow up to 30 cm in length, although their usual breadth is between 7.5 and 15.5 cm. The disk produces seeds as the sunflower blooms from mid-summer to early autumn.

Planting the Sunflower

Before sowing your sunflower seeds, first, find a spot that can offer a nurturing environment to your plant. Sunflowers require 6-8 hours of sunlight every day. The spot you prefer must offer shelter from strong winds so the flowers do not lose their balance in the wind when they grow.

Next, sow the sunflower seeds in a well-draining soil. Make sure the planting doesn't need a pool of water during the monsoon season. Also, don't worry this plant is not too particular for soil requirements and it can thrive in acidic or alkaline soil. Dig the soil 2 feet deep and 3 feet wide to sow the seeds as the roots of the plant stretch out.

NOTE: The soil must be nutrient-rich with composted manure or organic matter because Sunflowers are heavy feeders.

The Right Time to Plant Sunflower

The right time to plant the sunflowers is essential for its growth.

  • Plant sunflowers after the last frost date in spring when soil temperatures reach above 55°F (13°C). This is usually in late April to early May depending on your location.
  • For optimum germination, ensure the soil temperature is consistently warm, ideally between 70°F and 85°F (21°C and 29°C).
  • Sunflowers have a long growing season because of this plan to plant early enough to allow them to mature before the first frost in autumn.
  • To prevent planting during times of extreme rain or drought, adjust your planting times based on your local climate and weather trends.

Sowing Sunflower Seed

There are a few essential steps involved in sowing sunflower seeds. First, sow the seeds in the soil. to a depth of 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm). This depth keeps the seeds moist and protects them from insects.

Following that, provide the seeds with the proper spacing. Standard varieties should be spaced 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) apart. With this space, there is no competition for nutrients and each sunflower may reach its maximum size. When planning your garden layout keep in mind that larger sunflower varieties demand more room.

Once sowing is completed water the soil thoroughly to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering as sunflowers favour well-drained soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods to support healthy blossoming.

Nutrients for Sunflower

Sunflowers require a balanced supply of nutrients to grow strong and produce vibrant blooms. While fertilization is essential to the plant, over-fertilisation can cause the stem to break.
