What is Sleep Apnea?

03, December 2025

Imagine this

You are dead tired and go to bed.

Slowly you're drifting into dreamland, only to be jolted awake gasping for air. Not exactly the stuff dreams are made of, right?

Yes, if you have experienced this condition it is called Sleep Apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a serious sleep disorder that disrupts your breathing while you sleep, causing intermittent pauses in airflow.

These pauses can range from a few seconds to minutes and can happen multiple times throughout the night. And your brain and body are left gasping for oxygen, leading to fragmented sleep and a host of daytime symptoms.

Though it sounds simple on paper, it can be quite dangerous

Do you know about the famous celebrities who passed away due to sleep apnea?

Our own musical idol Bappi Lahiri, Carrie Fischer, Amanda Peterson etc are some of the famous celebrities who died due to Sleep Apnea.

Many other celebrities have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea such as Badshah, Shaquille O Neal, Amy Poehler, Arianna Huffington etc

What are the symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

So, how do you know if you're battling the sleep apnea monster? The following are the symptoms

  • Loud snoring (cue the elbow nudges from your bedmate)

  • Pauses in breathing during sleep (often observed by a partner/friend)

  • Gasping or choking sensations during the night

  • Excessive daytime fatigue

  • Morning headaches

  • Irritability and difficulty concentrating

Different Types of Sleep Apnea

There are three main types of sleep apnea, each with its own unique quirks:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

This is the most common form, characterized by a physical blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses during sleep.

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)

Unlike OSA, CSA stems from a problem with the brain's signaling, where it fails to send the proper signals to the muscles responsible for controlling breathing.

Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Also known as treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, this type occurs when someone with OSA develops CSA after starting CPAP therapy.

What to do for sleep apnea? Cures & Treatments

There are multiple ways to combat sleep apnea including the CPAP Therapy

What is CPAP Therapy?

For many folks with sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a game-changer. This involves wearing a mask connected to a machine that delivers a steady stream of air, keeping your airway open while you sleep.

Lifestyle Changes

Sometimes, small tweaks to your daily routine can yield big results. Maintain a healthy weight, avoid alcohol and sedatives before bed, and establish a consistent sleep schedule.

Oral Devices or Surgery

If CPAP isn't your cup of tea, oral appliances can also help keep your airway clear by repositioning your jaw and tongue during sleep and help solve sleep apnea. In severe cases or when other treatments haven't been effective, surgery may be an option to remove excess tissue blocking the airway or to reposition the jaw

Keep in Mind: If you suspect you have sleep apnea, reach out to a sleep specialist who can guide you through the diagnosis and treatment process.

So, here's to bidding farewell to restless nights with Sleep Apnea and hello to sweet dreams.

Until next time, sleep tight and breathe easy! Did we miss out on anything, do share in the comments
